When a father in Del City, Oklahoma, discovered a 33-year-old man was engaging in a sexual online relationship with his 15-year-old daughter, he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Thanks to computer software, the father — whose identity remains anonymous — was able to trace his daughter’s online activity. After finding out about the sexual predator, the father recruited the whole family to make sure the man got arrested.
“The family took it upon themselves to pretend to be her and invite the suspect to the house to meet her in the backyard in a tent for the purpose of having sex,” Major Jody Suit of the Del City Police Department told KOCO. “Just before he enters the tent, the father and three family members … tackle him and zip tie his hands and feet and hold him until the police get there.”
The entire operation was captured on the family’s surveillance camera.
The 33-year-old man, who KOCO 5 has chosen not to identify because he hasn’t been formally charged, was in an online sexual relationship with the teenage girl, police said.
During the family’s operation, the teen girl was in the house, unaware of the plan, said her father.
According to the father, once the 33-year-old man was detained, he admitted he was there to have sex with his daughter. The man remained tied up until police arrived.
“The pictures were being sent back and forth, and sexual behavior, or at least sexual acts, virally were occurring,” Suit said.
Police officials said they do not recommend the family’s sting operation.
“But as a parent, I don’t blame him,” Suit said. “I think it’s your right to protect your children.”
The man wasn’t hurt, but he was arrested on complaints of unlawful communication by the use of technology, using a phone and social media to communicate with a minor.
