Sarri is on the hunt for a new job after Napoli hired Carlo Ancelotti to replace him.
Zenit had set their sights on the Italian boss, who has worked wonders in Serie A this season.
The Blues want to hire Sarri too as doubts remain over the long-term future of Antonio Conte.
And now they are the clear front-runners for his signature as the Russian club opted to move for someone else.
