Lamela struggled with injuries last season and will be hoping to return his best form this campaign

The 26-year-old joined from Roma in 2013 as a replacement for Gareth Bale and has scored 23 goals in 154 appearances for the Lilywhites.

“We are delighted to announce that Erik Lamela has signed a new contract with the club, which will run until 2022,” Tottenham said in a statement on the club website.

After a slow start to his career in England, the winger began to acclimatize to the demands of the Premier League.

Under the tutelage of fellow countryman Mauricio Pochettino, he has developed into a far more consistent player who was capable of drifting between opposition lines to hurt teams.

In the 2015/16 season, Lamela scored five goals and notched up five assists as Spurs went close to winning the Premier League title.

A troublesome hip injury coupled with the death of his dog meant he missed the start of last season.

However, recovered to end the season with a goal against Leicester City on the final day.
