The news came after months of speculation linking the Slovakian with both United and their noisy neighbours Manchester City.

But Inter insist the 23-year-old, who only arrived from Sampdoria a year ago, is not for sale following his impressive form last term.

Now Skriniar has admitted that he was flattered by United’s enquiry – but insists he is happy with how things have turned out.

He told the Slovakian football federation’s official website: “Manchester United? I heard from them and it made me proud.

“But I’m even happier that Inter decided to reject it and that they believe so much in me.”

Skriniar joined the Serie A side in 2017, signing a five-year deal after a €20 million move from Sampdoria.

Last season, he averaged a 91.2% pass success rate – the seventh highest in the Italian league.
