Firmino was left on the bench for Brazil’s second group stage match against Costa Rica

Liverpool fans just don’t understand why one of the best strikers in the Premier League does not get selected to start for his country.

Roberto Firmino was named on the bench when Brazil opened their World Cup campaign against Switzerland last week, and it took until the 79th minute for Tite, the Selecao manager, to call upon the Anfield forward as a substitute.

He replaced the largely ineffectual Gabriel Jesus, of Manchester City, on that occasion, but Jesus remained in Brazil’s starting line-up for their second group match, against Costa Rica.

Firmino undeniably enjoyed a better domestic season than Jesus, scoring 27 goals and creating a further 17 in all competitions for Liverpool, but his international career has never really burst into life.

Nonetheless, he impressed in his cameo against the Swiss, and it actually came as quite a surprise he did not replace Jesus in Tite’s plans on Friday.

It was especially a surprise for Liverpool supporters, who took to social media to fume at Tite and his ‘nonsensical’ decisions.
