Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says Reds squad is stronger than any he played in during 17 years at the club

Jamie Carragher believes the current Liverpool squad is better than anything he experienced in 17 years at the club.

The Reds have been the Premier League’s highest spenders in the summer transfer window, splashing more than £170m to bring in Alisson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Carragher featured in the Champions League winning side of 2005 and played alongside the likes of Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres.

But Liverpool’s second-longest ever serving player admits that while this side must prove their title credentials, he can’t recall a stronger squad during his playing career.

“It does look like a really top-end squad at the moment, possibly as good as anything I was involved in and I was at Liverpool for 17 years,” he told talkSPORT.

“The squad that they have now and the strength they’re looking to gain is as good as anything I played in.”

However, while Liverpool own the world’s most expensive defender and goalkeeper, they have not invested in a new partner for Virgil Van Dijk this summer.

That means Dejan Lovren is likely to remain a first-choice centre-back at Anfield next season and, while he splits opinion among Reds fans, Carragher does not see the Croatian as a weakness.

“Lovren gets a lot of criticism from Liverpool fans and over his Liverpool career he has made mistakes in big games,” he added.

“But you’re talking about a centre-back who has made who has played in a Champions League final and a World Cup final over the last few months.

“They’ve got plenty of options there [at centre-back].

“They’ve got Van Dijk, who was a huge amount of money, but I always say it doesn’t matter how much money you spend on a player – if he performs, he’ll look worth it.

“In two or three years time, other centre-backs will go for big money and he’ll look like a bargain.”
