The son of legendary United keeper Peter Schmeichel saved three penalties in Denmark’s World Cup clash against Croatia
There was another pulsating game at the 2018 World Cup as Croatia and Denmark battled it out for a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
It was Croatia who just about came out on top – winning 3-2 on penalties after goals from Mathias Jorgensen and Mario Mandzukic made the game 1-1 after extra-time.
However, the most dramatic moment of the contest came a couple of minutes before the end of extra-time when Luka Modric was handed a brilliant chance to snatch the win for Zlatko Dalic’s men.
But Danish keeper Kasper Schmeichel had other ideas and brilliantly got down to his left to breathe new life into the tense tie at Nizhny Novgorod.
The Leicester man went on to save two more penalties but it was his opposite number Danijel Subasic who was the hero after saving three penalties in the shootout to ensure Croatia will face host nation Russia next.
However, this did not prevent Manchester United fans from congratulating Schmeichel – who is the son of Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel.
One fan likened Schmeichel Jr’s save to that of the dramatic stop his dad made to deny Dennis Bergkamp from the spot during United’s 2-1 FA Cup semi-final victory over Arsenal in their treble winning 1998/99 season.
Other fans also suggested the 31-year-old would be an ideal replacement for David De Gea if the Spaniard was ever to leave Old Trafford.
